As part of the International Year of Statistics (aka Statistics2013) MPK Analytics is launching a weekly Statistics of the Day initiative. Every Friday during 2013 we will post a brief informational statistical fact about our world with a focus on Edmonton, Alberta and Canada (roughly in that order). Without further ado, being the first Friday in January, here is this year’s first Statistics of the Day factoid.
During the last federal census in 2011, 3,645,257 people lived in Alberta of which 812,201 (22%) called Edmonton, the capital of the province, their home. Although the population of both Alberta and Edmonton has increased by 11% each during 2005-2011 the proportion of the population living in Edmonton has remained the same. (Source: Statistics Canada)

Would be interesting to look at a demographic comparison between Edmonton and Calgary, under criteria such as political afficilations, ethnicity, province and countries of origin. Would both of AB’s “big cities” have similar patterns, or contrasting trends? Not sure if Stats Canada db contains all this info or not — but might be able to augment with other sources.
